Norwich City 2-1 Sheffield United: Canaries hit back for comeback win

Amankwah Forson struck a late winner as Norwich came from behind to maintain their impressive Championship form with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sheffield United at Carrow Road.

Trailing at half-time to Jairo Riedewald's well-taken strike, the Canaries hit back in style, with an equaliser from Jack Stacey before substitute Forson guided them to an eighth win in 10 league games.

From being mired in a relegation fight at the turn of the year, Phillippe Clement's in-form side are now comfortably ensconced in mid-table, just nine points off the play-off zone, a point behind the Blades.

Norwich had the better of the opening stages, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the 21st minute.

When Kenny McLean was beaten to a high ball on the left, it was worked to Callum O'Hare, who darted inside before squaring for Riedewald to calmly side-foot home from some 10 yards out.

The Canaries produced a spirited reply to that setback and were almost on level terms - 10 minutes later - when Harry Darling's goal-bound strike was deflected just over by the outstretched leg of Tyler Bindon.

More good defending, this time with the head, saw Japhet Tanganga keep the Blades' lead intact just before the break as Mathias Kvistgaarden nodded a corner towards goal.

Norwich continued to have the better of it in the early stages of the second half, with Adam Davies producing a good save to foil Anis Ben Slimane before doing superbly to block Kellen Fisher's close-range snap-shot.

But the goalkeeper could do nothing as the hosts scored a deserved equaliser from the resultant corner on 68 minutes, with Stacey heading home to level the scores.

The Canaries continued to press and got their noses in front in the 84th minute as two substitutes combined in explosive fashion.

Paris Maghoma was the architect with a break from midfield and an inch-perfect pass to the left where Forson, who had only been on the pitch for a couple of minutes, found the top corner with a sublime finish.

Norwich's Philippe Clement:

"We have 14 or 15 players out - I don't count now - and for the players to get that result, in the manner they did, shows how involved all our squad are in what we are achieving.

"We were up against a side in good form, with a big squad to choose from and came away with a very important win.

"We were a bit sloppy early on, we weren't playing our normal football and at half-time it was a case of telling the players to calm down and remind them what they were doing well and telling them what they should be doing better.

"We were unlucky not to score in the latter stages of the first half and in the second half we showed a lot of quality, created a lot of chances and scored two good goals.

"It's another example of the progress we are making."

Sheffield United's Chris Wilder:

"It feels there's something missing at the moment that we can't put a finger on - and we need to find answers to that quickly.

"It's not been good enough tonight and we have been punished by a good side who are in a false position in the table.

"The two goals we conceded were ridiculously poor ones but you could see it coming. In fairness to Norwich they were better than us in the second half and their subs impacted the game much more than ours did.

"We were in a good place after scoring our goal and I think we created more good chances than they did.

"But after going ahead we just didn't look after the ball well enough. We kept turning it over and that helped Norwich get back into it."
